he whole community rises and falls with the level of education of its citizens. If we can improve the quality of education, then we will improve the quality of life in this community. Improvement starts with identifying needs.
Jackson Public Schools faces challenges that many large urban districts face: a need for more community involvement with the schools; teacher and administrator shortages; low pay; declining student test scores. Getting a handle on these things is the first step.
We'll do that in two ways. First, with timely, focused data we intend to be a data-driven district. Second, we will continue to build strong partnerships. We've partnered with BellSouth and other solutions providers because we need quality equipment, quality partners, and quality services.
We've targeted four critical areas for improvement: academic performance; teacher and administrator development; parent and community involvement; and finance and facilities management.
