"The teacher shortage is upon us. There just aren't enough teachers today. Distance learning can help us meet some of those needs where there are critical shortages by bringing exemplary teaching to students via technology."
-- Ms. Martha Roberts, Executive Director for Curriculum and Instruction, Jackson Public Schools

Recognizing the potential of video conferencing, Jackson Public Schools has distance learning classrooms in two of the district's eight high schools. With the BellSouth ATM network, the district is expanding the program to include all high schools and middle schools, the Capital City Alternative School, the Professional Development Center and the central office.

This major expansion of the video network will help address the teacher shortage and other instructional needs. For example, a master teacher in one location can teach a class via the video network to students at other schools. Communication between schools and central office can also be enhanced.

Jackson Public Schools can also connect with Mississippi Educational Television's Interactive Video Network control center for communication with other parts of the state, nation, and the world. Implementing distance education will bring the world to Jackson's classrooms and provide unlimited resources to students and teachers.
"The limits of this kind of instruction are bounded only by our imagination."
-- Dr. Richard Thompson, Superintendent, Mississippi Department of Education
