"To my knowledge, this is the first system of this type. It's a comprehensive personnel, inventory, financial management system. It takes time out of the process, gives more control and saves money." -- Mr. Irving Bullet, BellSouth Account Manager
|
 |
It all started with the district's financial system. Mr. Michael Thomas, Chief Financial Officer of Jackson Public Schools, knew he had to do something about the district's financial software, because it wasn't providing data or processing reports as he needed. So as long as he was fixing those problems, he decided to address a host of other needs as well, including Y2K compliance.
The district can put selected human resources information on the district Intranet; institute electronic purchase orders and authorization; put budgets, payroll and inventory control on-line. State and federal reporting can be transmitted faster and more accurately. Faster reporting can translate to speedier receipt of funding. And all of this is in line with the district goal of driving accountability to the building level.
Mr. Thomas contracted with a financial software firm to customize its accounting package to suit Jackson's needs. The package is Y2K compliant, and standards-based. Then he put it all on-line, so information can reach all 66 buildings in the district. Access privileges are customized according to who needs what information.
As a man who watches pennies, Mr. Thomas appreciates the savings the new system will achieve in indirect ways, too: no postage, no couriers, less paper, reduced storage and warehousing requirements.

"The bottom line is the better we manage, the more money we can move into instruction, which is what we are all about." -- Mr. Michael Thomas, Chief Financial Officer, Jackson Public Schools |
