"You can't build tomorrow today using yesterday's tools." -- Mr. Irving Bullet, BellSouth Account Manager
|
 |
To build tomorrow today, Jackson Public Schools started by providing teachers with a common tool set: all teachers will have access to word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software. By using a common set of tools, teachers can share lesson plans, activities, and other teaching materials. They're already doing some interesting things, such as programming the screen saver to flash multiplication tables and spelling words while it "sleeps." Subliminal learning.
In addition, the district is providing all teachers with BellSouth Web Mail accounts. They can communicate with parents and other educators quickly and easily. Teachers can find the resources they need and bring the world into the classroom. Internet access is cheaper and safer than a field trip, and students and teachers can "travel" to places a school bus can't go -- like the Great Wall of China, or the ocean floor, or to Jupiter.
Every teacher will have a voice mailbox, so parents, administrators, family, and suppliers can reach him or her without interrupting teaching time. Some schools are experimenting with phones in every classroom, while others have opted for phones in teacher work areas. Administrators have received cell phones and pagers so they can be in contact when they are out and about. At the Central Office, the Information Services department is testing voice over IP (Internet protocol) phones.
Whatever the mode, communication is the thing. After all, education IS communication.
