"There is not really another technology that could do everything Jackson Public Schools wanted to do. ATM is the foundation that enables Jackson's schools to do all the things that they need to do. It's an enabler." -- Mr. John Haskett, BellSouth System Designer

Jackson Public Schools laid out some ambitious plans: scrap the multiple networks -- voice, video, data, and legacy systems. Scrap the multiple T1 lines. At the same time, increase capacity, increase distribution, and reduce system maintenance. In place of the old, multiple-line system, install one network that can do it all -- distance learning, financial records, on-line student assessment, voice communications, security monitoring, and much, much more. That's voice, video, and data, monitored 24 hours a day. Moving to one network will provide them with a more efficient use of bandwidth and network administration resources. To the BellSouth design team, there was only one solution: ATM.
ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) can be used to transmit any kind of data over just about any kind of network: LANs, MANs, WANs, video, and voice. ATM integrates LAN and WAN resources into one network. It's fast, flexible, scaleable, and efficient. ATM is a switched, high-speed, connection-oriented service that enables simultaneous transport of voice, video, and data. ATM also provides bandwidth savings by securing the most efficient bandwidth needed by a specific application. ATM is suited to customers looking for ways to reduce network costs by unifying multiple networks onto a single platform to eliminate redundant, incompatible management systems.
The specifics on ATM:
- It is flexible. It is interoperable with other services, and can transmit different data speeds and different protocols simultaneously. No other single technology can do this.
- It is cost-efficient. It allows customers to run, monitor, and maintain a single, highly reliable network. It uses only the bandwidth the data require, and can deliver in real-time or on a delayed basis.
- It is scaleable. ATM can be utilized to support a wide range of interface speeds.
- It supports various qualities of service.
- It offers advantages in total network integration.

"ATM is going to give us a network that is more reliable, more scaleable, with increased bandwidth. We'll have more control and better prioritization. We'll save money in the long run: the more we put on this wire, the more we're able to do, so we'll get more for our money." -- Mr. Kemper Porter, Network Administrator, Jackson Public Schools |
