To a person, the Jackson administrators and the BellSouth team working with Jackson's schools say the same thing over and over: the keys to this solution are the applications and services that ride on it. By that they mean the teaching and testing tools, the accounting software, the security monitoring tools -- all of that.

Online student assessment and Internet based research tools will impact the quality of learning in each classroom.

To build a full solution, Jackson Public Schools identified the software providers in each need area, and looked at hardware providers to round out the system. Jackson Public Schools chose BellSouth Business Internet Services to provide dedicated Internet access throughout the district. They found vendors to provide the student assessment software and the financial accounting package. They found hardware vendors to provide routers, switchers, and the video devices needed for distance learning. And they found BellSouth to provide the ATM backbone, telephony, and to work with them to tie it all together.

The work is not over. There are some solutions still in the bidding process, and as Jackson Public Schools moves ahead, new applications and solutions will be identified and added. Teams of people and companies working together over time build solutions.
