No school system exists in a vacuum. Schools serve, and are served by, many masters. Two of the most important relationships a school district can have are with the State Department of Education and the local business community.

Jackson Public Schools has worked hard to share its vision of the future with state and local leaders, and has benefited from their input, support, and guidance as well. Here's what two such leaders have to say about the JPS technology initiative.

"Mississippi Department of Education The potential of technology is great to help us improve student achievement. We are looking for quantum leaps, because we are a poor state and are so far behind. We need dramatic steps. If we don't make quantum leaps in student achievement, we will always be behind."

Dr. Richard Thompson, Superintendent

"Technology is an integral part of education. We are a part of a global economy. Children must have knowledge, skills and abilities that are much different from those of the past. They have to know how to use technology in the workplace; they have to know how to use technology to solve problems quickly; our teachers have to teach with technology and about technology. The Learning Connection will do all of these things."

Dr. William Lewis, Executive Director, The Public Education Forum (an alliance between business people and public education)
